What would u do for an internship? Research? Or be attached to a mentor who can pull your hand along as you work in the 3/6 months that you're gonna be at the company?

Would it be for the company's prestige (brand/name etc) and the money they offer?

Or would it be to learn...independently.

Now that the SG side has not called me...really thinking about this seriously le.

NUS sure is getting interesting

Just checked my mail in the early morning today and I received 2 very interesting emails. 2 new modules in fact. Gosh, why didn't they come up with such modules earlier? But is NUS evolving? Haha....on the surface, they sound interesting, and coupled with the latest S/U policy I would give it a try if I had the chance!

The first is on this new module, CS3216 : Software Development on Evolving Platforms. And this module is a Facebook Programming module.

Yes, you heard it right, FACEBOOK module.

Apparently, the course is open to non-SOC (School of Computing) students and they are required to work in groups to create killer Facebook applications (ok how 'killer' it will be, we ain't sure?). And guess what?? No programming experience as pre-requisite!!!

On top of that, bidding is NOT via CORS, but via the submission of a personal statement. What a module! Now you can be part of the process to bring addiction to facebook to a higher level. How cool.

The School of Computing will be offering a new 4-MC Facebook Programming module on next Semester (AY2007/2008, Semester 2) - CS3216 : Software Development on Evolving Platforms. This is your chance to be a part of this new global Internet phenomenon, currently valued at some US$15 billion.

This new module is not your traditional software engineering course. Enrollment will be open to students of all faculties and students will work in small inter-disciplinary teams to create their killer Facebook applications. Programming experience for non-SoC students is not a pre-requisite (since work will be done in teams).

As it turns out, Trey Phillips , the winner of Facebook F8 Hackathon, is a philosophy major. This suggests that ANYONE without programming background can be a Facebook Developer. The nominal pre-requisite is thus CS1101, but students who do not have formal programming background but who have a keen interest in e-entrepreneurship or a background in design. Students will not be assessed individually, but in groups, so individual programming proficiency will not be assessed. Students need only to be able to contribute substantively to their team projects. The success of social networking applications depend a lot on the concept and execution rather than good programming ability. The students can develop their applications in their language of choice, but will likely use PHP or Ruby with mySQL.

The next email, is rather interesting as well, therefore I'm placing it here also...Apparently there're Theatre Studies modules in NUS (why did I not hear of them?) and they have a production called "The West Wing" coming up. The modules are apparently Play production modules, TS3237 and TS3103.

The West Wing is a TV series drama by NBC, if I'm not wrong, and there's even a movie which was released in 1999.

So the learning in NUS has diversified yet again...let's just see how much more of such 'exploration' modules that they can offer to the students, and although I doubt I can be part of such a change in the system, I believe it is a good thing for students to be exposed to more areas and do modules which they really like doing.

I Am Legend

A new movie with hints of I,Robot in it? Well, the poster looks as familiar as the scene in the end of I,Robot, where the destroyed Brooklyn bridge is seen in the background with the robots coming out of hiding.

Synopsis:
A man-made virus wipes out the population of New York City, leaving Robert Neville (Will Smith) the last human survivor in the city and possibly the world. Neville lives alone for three years, attempting to contact and find other possible survivors. He is watched by the Infected, mutant victims of the plague. Neville works to find a way to create a cure using his own immune blood, but he finds himself outnumbered by the Infected and running out of time.

I think it's gonna be interesting, not just scary, but it will be really an exploration of how one can survive for 3 years without ANY contact with another human being. An intriguing piece of story, and judging from the trailers, it seems like the directors have managed to carve out the personality of the main character, a character who struggles being the only one alive, and being alone.

I am, therefore, I will.

Of blue screens and....more blue screens

What a pain. I thought I had gotten myself a fairly interesting game to play - Football Manager 07/08, but alas the game had to screw up my system's boot record and well, its removal was just about the only choice.

How stupid.

The removal of the entire software caused even more mayhem for my computer, which served as my only portal back to the little red dot. The late night conversations, the stupid stuff to talk to friends, the voices of my mum and dad...gosh. I felt that my life was suddenly 'torn' apart when I realised that the laptop would not start.

A horrifying thought indeed. No laptop, no access to the WWW. No way to do homework. No way to chat to family and friends.

Spent the whole of yesterday night trying to resolve the problem. No luck. In fact, I fell asleep on my bed whilst waiting for the safe mode to load (and it did not).

Luckily I had set my alarm before falling asleep, so I managed to wake up in time to try my luck at starting up the laptop again, but it failed. Finally decided to go to school early to look for the IT helpdesk, hopefully they could help me...but I guess I held too high a hope.

With little choices left, and with the need for all my data, I decided to get the number of the IBM technical support, and after wasting 4 Euros, I just managed to get them to send down a recovery CD. And they even refused outright to come down to check what's the problem with the laptop. I was super PISSED and ANGRY, not to mention, sleepy (4 hrs sleep).

Tired and weary, I dragged myself into class, and sms-ed Chris (my Dutch classmate) and Joanna (e other SGrean in Eindhoven!) for help...hopefully I could get the data out of the computer before I did anything serious (i.e. reformat).

Finally, I went to my faculty's IT helpdesk (yes this is the smaller one and not the main IT helpdesk I went for help earlier in the morning), and they lent me a GUI BartPE to access my data and retrieve them all! FINALLY!

Relief swept through me.

After the backup, I thanked them and went to the computer labs to undertake MSN-whilst-reformatting. At least I managed to read up more on the problem and talk to friends whilst taking the long long time to reformat and reinstall windows.

Damage: Repairable.
Cost of Damage: A WHOLE FREAKING DAY

I'm not gonna download games anymore. Learnt my lesson.

Musings...

Cut my hair...and I cant believe I paid 15 Euros for a crew-cut!!! ARGHHH. I could have done it myself, save for the lack of a proper pair of scissors.

Weixian and his friend coming over this coming weekend...time to clear my messy room (it's barely packed after my trip to Peiyu's).

And to top it off, I had a great inertia to do just about ANYTHING recently. For example, even going out, just felt bored. Probably I've really settled down, I guess? hehs. Or is it just a matter of not bothering to find things to do, or not knowing enough people here?

Eat, Sleep, Study, Drink, Party...but travelling is not on the minds of many here. I wish to find someone who is willing to travel with me (or me with him/her), but it almost seems impossible.



October woke me up, and November rain is here. What's for December?

3 months more? Time flies. indeed.

Jay Chou’s first S’pore concert in 3 years: Fans upset over hard time booking tickets

Taiwanese R&B whix Jay Chou has every reason to smile. His upcoming concert has become Singapore’s fastest-selling show ever.

And there is now talk of a second show.

Priority tickets for the Jay Chou World Tour 2008, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on 19 Jan, went on sale on Monday for OCBC credit cardholders. Public sales start next Monday.

Within a day, 80 per cent of the 8,700 tickets were snapped up, said concert promoter Hype Records.

This translate to 6,900 tickets priced between $78 and $198.

Sistic chief operating officer Kenneth Tan told The New Paper that the concert “broke all previous records” at the ticketing agent.

Wow! Almost all sold out! And that's 80% of the 8,700 tickets! I wonder what would happen if the tickets were made available to the public. Scenes of "Hello Kitty" anyone?? Gosh. This shows how eager Singaporeans are for Jay to come down to SG. Hope there are more slots open! And apparently he's starting to rehearse for the concerts!

Gee...Dun think I can make it back in time. Anyway, with 80% of the tickets gone, well, I guess there's not much chance of getting the ticket. -.-"
