Emerge 2008

First time being a photographer for an indoor event...really lucky that I could take some pictures and test run my D60!! Emerge is an annual production organised by VOICES, which is a sub-club of CAC. This time round, VOICES decided to break the old traditions of holding in 'serious' venues, and opted for a softer, more modern feel...right in the heart of town, in MOS, Clarke Quay.

A lot of the pictures were seriously overexposed...think my metering had some issues. Gotta learn and adjust more. The initial shots tend to be more overexposed as compared to the latter ones. Therefore, the shots done later are much better. haha.

But overall, it was a good experience to do indoor shoots with a DSLR. Very wonderful feeling indeed!

Sex and NUS

Did u guys read the recent s3x survey done in NUS? Shocking? Or was it more of "oh wells, it's all known..." and "u mean, now it's OFFICIAL??" *cue innocent+shocked face*

Well, I guess we guys know about the hkpk happening behind the scenes in the quiet (or not-so-quiet) hall life in NUS, right? Maybe not everyone who stays in hall engage in such activities, but definitely, if there is word about it circling round the campus, it cant be based on untruths or half-truths, right? 正所谓：无风不起浪.

And maybe, incoming freshies will be more interested in hall-life...com'on dudes...taste the wonderful life in school...and see for yourself if the report is true (or false?).

And on the other hand, we all know the 'fact' that CJC has one of the highest abortion rates in the 2000 period, and now (apparently) HCI (HCJC as it is formerly known) has taken over the dubious 'honour'.

Wait a minute...who came up with such honours in the first place?? Probably someone who wanted to spice up the entire "this JC vs that JC" thing. Like the question on how many xJC students does it take to change a light bulb (where x is the prefix, say...R, or C, or AC, etc...). Stereotypes, as we learn in HR2002.

Oh and HR2002...the module which IA students take after a long day at work in school from 6.15pm onwards. The module which apparently teaches you how to understand human relations in the new economy. Which, in fact, I am rushing a reflection essay now based on my personal experiences, all of which come from my internship so far. I'm more than happy at my internship, but maybe I should leave that to a later time.

So during last week's class, the topic was on framing (of people). As class participation, we were supposed to relate a word with the first thought on our minds (obviously, most of us did not do that, if you take 1 minute to blurt out an answer, it just means the word went through the brain, down your throat, into the stomach, got digested, and went back up to your vocal chords to be blurted out. hurhurhur)

Well, I decided to have a little fun for that, so when I was given the word "Psychologist", I said...

Guess my life revolves around movies. I've caught a lot of movies (and on dvds if I did not get to watch on TV or on the big screen). If I actually gave a little more thought on the word psychologists, I would probably blurt words such as "psychotic", "lab coated guys in high armchairs" or "shrinks".

Guess that's my urban lifestyle now...movies. I need some escapades out of this little red dot. Toilet break, anyone??

Internship!

After 2.5 months of sending of emails to various companies on my own, crazy waiting for the results of the IA in NUS, and realising that I was rejected by NSL Chemicals and not considered by Bayer and Evonik...it was a relief to hear that I finally got a job.

Or rather, an internship.

Though I might have preferred it to be overseas...but well, a chance is a chance...

Phew. At least the next 6 months of my life is fixed. Which, you can see it as good or bad, depending on your view on internships. Even a schedule for the internship is out, and I believe that the past 6 months of solid enjoyment will be used to overcome the upcoming 6 months of internship hell.

Nonetheless, I am quite lucky to have gotten this opportunity and would really love to learn more, after all, that's prolly what an internship would allow you to do. The company seems to be pretty big, and well, apart from it not being the size of ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell, I hope that somehow, somewhat, I will be getting something out of this opportunity AND a future job there. Who knows?

So...the next 6 months are already planned...or rather, I foresee a very busy 2008. Gee...

NUS sure is getting interesting

Just checked my mail in the early morning today and I received 2 very interesting emails. 2 new modules in fact. Gosh, why didn't they come up with such modules earlier? But is NUS evolving? Haha....on the surface, they sound interesting, and coupled with the latest S/U policy I would give it a try if I had the chance!

The first is on this new module, CS3216 : Software Development on Evolving Platforms. And this module is a Facebook Programming module.

Yes, you heard it right, FACEBOOK module.

Apparently, the course is open to non-SOC (School of Computing) students and they are required to work in groups to create killer Facebook applications (ok how 'killer' it will be, we ain't sure?). And guess what?? No programming experience as pre-requisite!!!

On top of that, bidding is NOT via CORS, but via the submission of a personal statement. What a module! Now you can be part of the process to bring addiction to facebook to a higher level. How cool.

The School of Computing will be offering a new 4-MC Facebook Programming module on next Semester (AY2007/2008, Semester 2) - CS3216 : Software Development on Evolving Platforms. This is your chance to be a part of this new global Internet phenomenon, currently valued at some US$15 billion.

This new module is not your traditional software engineering course. Enrollment will be open to students of all faculties and students will work in small inter-disciplinary teams to create their killer Facebook applications. Programming experience for non-SoC students is not a pre-requisite (since work will be done in teams).

As it turns out, Trey Phillips , the winner of Facebook F8 Hackathon, is a philosophy major. This suggests that ANYONE without programming background can be a Facebook Developer. The nominal pre-requisite is thus CS1101, but students who do not have formal programming background but who have a keen interest in e-entrepreneurship or a background in design. Students will not be assessed individually, but in groups, so individual programming proficiency will not be assessed. Students need only to be able to contribute substantively to their team projects. The success of social networking applications depend a lot on the concept and execution rather than good programming ability. The students can develop their applications in their language of choice, but will likely use PHP or Ruby with mySQL.

The next email, is rather interesting as well, therefore I'm placing it here also...Apparently there're Theatre Studies modules in NUS (why did I not hear of them?) and they have a production called "The West Wing" coming up. The modules are apparently Play production modules, TS3237 and TS3103.

The West Wing is a TV series drama by NBC, if I'm not wrong, and there's even a movie which was released in 1999.

So the learning in NUS has diversified yet again...let's just see how much more of such 'exploration' modules that they can offer to the students, and although I doubt I can be part of such a change in the system, I believe it is a good thing for students to be exposed to more areas and do modules which they really like doing.

And the end of Rag sounded the end of O-week, the start of a new school year/semester.

For me, in a week's time I'm flying off to the Netherlands, where I would probably face the same weather (rain) in a more cold (not to mention, windy) situation.

Funny how the days during O-week just passed me by. Could barely remember the first day of O-Week, when I was late. Or the days of talking cock, playing with freshies...Makes me remember the times during my freshmen year, when we were having fun playing games, with not a concern for the upcoming years ahead.

Gosh...year 3 already...time really flies. What have I done in NUS for the past 2 years? Hmm...Rovers was my main priority, and joining Engineering faculty events was secondary. And through my trips, I got to know a lot of people, though most of them were kinda like hi-bye friends. Committees were much better, in which u got to know people more, through work, through laughter, through *shrugs* arguments. And long-lasting friendships, definitely.

I always held the idea that camps and o-weeks are more to allow people to interact and socialise. To let them get to know new people, have fun, and see how the friendship goes on from there-on.

Now...time to sleep. In fact I had typed these before I was carelessly conked up yesterday night. This showed that I indeed had too little rest. Tsk.

Rounded up the day with a visit to Suntec's food court (not impt) and Ben & Jerry's (impt!!)!!! With half of Care Bears there, and the rest being Kraken freshies, it was really a great get-together. A total of 4 Merlionsters were walloped during our stay there, so I bet that B&J must be damn happy for our presence la!

Luckily, had a ride home by Yvonne, so it was faster than I thought.

Heard about the Perseids Meteor Shower tml...dunno whether can see it or not...Hmmz.

Updates!

Was still reeling from the effects of the test. Sighs. Thought of going home, to sleep and dunk myself in water (maybe). This very bad feeling did not subside despite 6 hours of doing nothing. Was talking to Alvin before we saw Selina, and then I had noticed Shuang Hui in the library so went to look for her after the 2 of them left for their classes. To say that I was a sorry figure mopping around in library would probably be an understatement?

I guessed I cheered up somewhat seeing Shuang, and we went down to Forum to see what is there, and we noticed the GREEN van! MILO! (And from then on someone morphed into Milo-girl o.O")

In the midst of the small and pathetic crowd awaiting the Milo's truck opening we saw Weiguang and Janna, and to think that 4's not a crowd we also saw June! Mini-Rovers gathering of some sorts, without planning too! And slurping up the delicious thick Milo was great! But just remember NOT to be the first few to drink 'cos you'll get those yucky powder stuff still in the drink (right Shunag?)

And after that, we brought up 2 more cuppas for Shuang's friend Yanping, who incidentally is also another Milo fanatic. Luckily, there were 2 cups. Any lesser would be deemed a crime (of sorts).

Went for Cac+us performance today! Support support Anqi, Junhao and Wenyong in their production, and it was quite good! The acting seemed natural (or maybe it IS considering how lame Matthew can normally get). On top of that, I did not know beforehand that Matthew and Lixiang were involved in the production as well! -rawr-

Nonetheless, the show was great, despite the slip-ups at times (well it happens when you look at a person and call her (2x!) by her real names on stage instead of using the alias), and if we didn't ask, we probably won't know that there were many slip-ups! Kudos to the fast reactions of the actors on that part!

Ok while the event ended there and then for the performers and the audience, for some of us it hasn't! Weili, Mark, Huiyan and I went out outside to look at the sky, and found some steps in a form of an open-sky theater! After trying to take a couple of pics here and there, we decided to try taking the SMU jump! Countless and numerous pictures ensued as we tried to coincide with the timing of the flash! I think there were probably 3-5 good pictures out of the 20++ pictures we took!

The jumps definitely made one tired...so we sat around, and went over to the loading/unloading bay to see if there was anything we could help (or take pictures of). Instead of really helping, we just continued picture-whoring and snapping away!

Alas, time passes fast while having fun, and as we walked in the empty underground carpark, I realised how time had passed me by. 2 years in NUS already, moving on to 3. Yet, I'm still not finding a direction in this wilderness. A calling? Chem Eng is nice, but the grades dun reflect that. And that sucked.

Managed to catch a super-fast 105 home after taking the last 96! Woohoo! This is the most interesting nite I had in school! A night of fun, not caring about a thing... Time to recharge the batteries!
