Punggol Park!

Simply beautiful and serene park in the north of Singapore, just a little off Hougang. And the name of the park is definitely misleading...It's NOT in Punggol. Haha.

Just suddenly had the urge to run up to Punggol Park, run a couple of rounds there, and head back via Upper Serangoon Road (yes...the LONG route). I've attached the pic for the dist covered on the way up, the trip down is similar.

Brought along my ez-Link card, a $10 note, and my handphone just in case. A long run calls for contingencies, and the most important things are ez-Link card (bus/MRT) and handphone (to call ppl! *lol*)

Met Heng Hong for the run at Punggol Park. Ran 3 rounds with her, and 1 round myself. Her stamina was good, and would probably have ran more if she had not ran at Hougang Stadium herself in the first place.

The breeze was nice, air was cool, and the water was indeed calm. How serene, how beautiful...Running really allowed me to relax and forget certain things, at the same time, it allowed me to focus and concentrate. Call it runner's high or whatever, it really IS good for you.

Went over to Hougang Mall, bought a drink of Ribena for some energy, and saw XMY there. Haha. Then ran back, same route. Took around 50mins or so, had a drink of Milo from Mac's.

Hmm, never really measured distance again, probably would be in the range of 15km? I'll check it ASAP.

Bombings...again?

Natural disasters, Bombings by crazed people...It seems that the world is going crazy. Really crazy. A group crazy to blow themselves to oblivion over and over again.

This just happened like 2 hours ago. Two bomb blasts in the island of Bali have wrecked havoc and claimed lives again! The explosions took place in Jimbaran beach and a bustling outdoor shopping center in downtown Kuta. More info here.

The explosions were believed to be the work of terrorists. The blasts came a month after Indonesia's President warned of possible terrorist attacks.

After a talk with Kossy, gleamed some truth in her words, "the world is punishin us for our evils...some of us are better off dead..."

Don't we all think so? It might just be the key. People who cannot tolerate the existence of each other, people who despise each other, people who do not hold faith in the other party...

My marketing tutor told us in our first lesson that the one major change from the 1900s and now, is the lack of trust. A simple look around the world on the way business is being done surely speaks volumes.

Contracts.
Clauses.
Suing.
Counter-suing.

The list just goes on...

Well, one day, we might just wake up to see a whole new world, a world blown to bits by the very people who make up this world...a world which Man made and destroyed thereafter...a world where people's hatred of one another over-rules the beauty of diversity...

RIP, for the innocents who have lost their lives, for the hundreds who have had their lives shattered in one way or another, for the thousands who would invariably be affected (directly or not) by the foolish actions of a select few.

May the world be a better place. Cherish the moments, memories and people you have now, for it all might just disappear in a wink of an eye...

Theories From NUS

Just gotta blog the latest theories I've conceived, with the help of NUS and Daryl, over the past week. It's weird, 'cos these theories stemmed from facts we've learnt and seen in everyday life. In fact, used commonly in figure of speech too!

So, sit back, and enjoy...

1) Fact: NUS uses bell-curve to compute results. Wanna know why? 'Cos NUS is a bell-shaped university. Look around, from Science to Engineering, from Engineering to Arts, from YIH to Arts...the list just goes on. More and more hills, so who said that NUS aint a bell-shaped school? It is, and it's personified in the way they do things too.

2) The module I'm taking, GEK1510, talks basically on great ideas which physicists have came up with over the past years. We learnt the photoelectric effect, which most of you 'A' level physics dudes out there would have learnt before (For the uninitiated, I've even included a link for you here.). On top of that, we learn about electrons being in excited states due to energy gain.

The above is the all-famous figure of speech whereby a person's 'light-bulb' lights up whenever he has an incoming idea. Why? One might ask.

The theory, is simple.

When a push is given to the person's head, the force is transferred to the brain cells in the head, giving them an initial acceleration.

F = ma

where F is the push on the head, m is the total mass of the brain cells, and a is the acceleration of the system.

So energy is also transferred to the brain-cell-system, since there is Conservation of Momentum. Velocity of the brain-cell-system increases due to the force acting on it. Energy is also transferred, by Conservation of Energy. The electrons will be in an excited state due to the energy taken in.

When the electrons in the brain cell take in energy, they will take in a quantum packet of energy, since you take in either whole or none of the energy given to it. In that case, those electrons in the brain cell which gain enough energy will be able to 'escape' the system, by emitting photons. The brain cells, on emission of photons, will then lose energy, as well as the corresponding number of electrons to the number of photons emitted.

The emission of photons thus reflects why the light-bulb appears when an on-rushing idea comes in.

3) There's also another theory, this time from Quantum Mechanics. There's this theorem which states that if a particle hits a surface (e.g. wall) fast and hard enough, the particle just might be able to pass through the surface without the surface having a hole.

This theory applies to real life too. Many times, why do we sense pain when we punch a wall?

This is because due to the punch, some particles (or atoms) from your hand (or surface of your knuckle) has passed through the surface. The passing through of atoms into the wall means that the atoms has gone INTO the wall, and therefore you feel pain, because the atoms have left your hand.

Now you know why...

We learn new things everyday, don't we?

Teasers

"What happens when everyone in the world flushes their toilet at the same time?"

Hmmm....I wonder..."flash" flood? Posted question to Noel. His answer? All the toilets would be FINALLY clean!

pengz-ded.

Anyway, had a great run today, from NUS to Holland Road and back. Distance? Still calculating..(any kind souls out there who would care to help me? ^_^")

Pretty good weather today for a run today, and Yi Hui did her own run, probably 5km or more, using the Haw Par Villa (no defunct) route. Ran on Monday with her prior to Maths, and it was a relatively good run then. Decided that she should run her own speed and pace, and since Noel had time, he joined me for a run.

Pretty fast paced, and Noel's stamina is good too. And we even had the energy to talk during the run! Man...it's a great feeling. Time for more runs like this. I bet this will be one of my designated routes to run already...Next one, To Bukit Timah Road!

And when we ran, we smelt food, which sent our stomachs growling.

Talking about food, maybe it's time to eat HEALTHY food like *ahem* told us to. Yea, I reckoned the recent week since Lumbong I've been downing pretty much of junk food.

Saturday was biscuits, fries, breakfast bars and other junk for keeping myself awake throughout Cyclohunt.
Sunday was MacDonalds' Big Breakfast (cos they did not have the Sausage McMuffin Meal promo -_-")
Monday was Ice-cream, Apple Crumble, 100 Plus and Season's Lemon Tea for dinner (after run...OMG).
Tuesday was MacDonalds for lunch and chicken cutlet for dinner.
Wednesday was craving for...more ice-cream. In the end, I got myself a cuppa Slurpie (which I've not touched for ages).

I need HEALTHY food already...sighz.

Need help for my survey on music downloading! It's right....here.

And...that reminds me. Physics scores out here. oWn3d. 'Nuff said.

All the more, the need to study. The need to work hard...

It's soccer night today. Chelsea vs Liverpool. Forget about study...for now

Cyclohunt over!

*plonks onto chair*

Just had an overnight Cyclohunt event organised by NUS Rovers, simply fantastic, knowing that an event has ran pretty smoothly with little glitches. A time to bond with the other committee members too, and a time to have fun during the night. Different from camping, different from chalets, yet, the idea was almost the same.

To enjoy each other's company whilst on a project.

And this project, Cyclohunt 2005.

Great job by you guys, somehow, it made me feel like I've contributed less than some of you in terms of the entire running of the event. Something like an outsider, a bystander, and someone looking for things to do (in the end trying to become a photographer)

Nevertheless, the night was great and it was fun. Ran, played bridge, cycled, went up to the participants who had problems in the lorry...the list just goes on.

And I went down memory lane and a trail of thought again just today morning. Simply interesting, how a deck of cards could sometimes give so much meaning.

Now, for some sleep...

Wet Wet Wet

That's the song to describe my feelings as I trekked up Lumbong, Kota Tinggi, Johore.

Number of times in the water...Uncountable.
Coldness of water...simply shiok!
Highest record of slips/falls per person, unmentionable and unforgettable.
Lumbong 20-21 Sep Trip, PRICELESS.
For everything else, there's NUS Rovers.

Day started off pretty well, with 5 comm members (Meena, Candice, Heng Hong, Safraz and myself) and Huan Liang and Peizhen gathered at Kranji MRT with 13 other participants raring to go. We reached Larkin Bus Terminal earlier than expected. Well, I would've preferred that in any case, since getting there earlier would mean we would start our trek slightly earlier, since I was unsure what would the speed of the people be like.

Asking the cab uncle for the weather conditions for the past 2 days, he said that there has been heavy rain for the previous 2 mornings already, and I was relieved.

I was wrong.

The initial part of the trek was slowed down with us having lost sight of 2 people at a turn in the plantation. Granted, the plantation is an easy way to get lost, and so would be rest of the trek itself.

After clearing the 1st waterfall with relative ease (and falling off a slippery rock, thereby making lacerations my right leg), we stopped for a rest. There was a distinct change in weather, and Candice and I took out our raincovers in anticipation for the rain.

It came, just as we were crossing the 'valley'.

And it was also a high water level for the 'valley'. In fact, it was up to my waist level already. The rain became heavier and we stopped at the 2nd waterfall to decide on our next course of action. Visibility had definitely dimmed, and it would not be adviseable to move forth for fear of the ability of the participants to continue effectively in the rain.

And we waited for half an hour or so, and the rain drops became smaller, and we decided to move on to do the river crossings ASAP. The ground was much more softer and slippery, and that slowed movement, especially the vertical climbing portions.

Still, we managed to reach the first river crossing from the 2nd waterfall en route to the 3rd. After a moment of deliberation of the fast moving water current and unsee-able ground, we managed to get all the people across the river, and reached the 3rd waterfall soon enough. By then, the rain had already stopped, and sunshine peeked through, for now.

When we reached the summit, the feeling and morale of everyone suddenly increased. Thoughts of food, and the pitching of tents, certainly kept everyone going. Alas, weather decided to play a trick on us, with rain and lightning coming after us shortly after our tents are up. Huddling together, the wind was simply making us feel cold, and the rain didn't help either. It seriously reminded me of my 5d 6n Recruit days in BMT. The cold. The wetness. The shivering. I decided to go around and check the tent, 'cos I had a feeling a rain this big would definitely cause the underside of the tent to collect water. So, I tried digging holes near the places were the water was starting to collect.

To my horror, the ground showed that the rushing of the water was going towards the tent. We quickly tried to build up a layer of sand to keep out more water from going to the underside of the tent (it would make the insides wet mah). At that moment, you are shivering from the cold wind and drenched state, and feeling like a bangla worker building something in the rain. Not funny, at all. But memorable? Yes definitely ;)

Soon, the rain subsided. (Yea...AFTER we've built it all up -_-") Started on Phase II: Project Remove-the-water-from-the-tent. It was a mini-flood in our 8-man tent. Not a pretty sight indeed.

Phase III begun soon after, with the setting up of our BBQ pit (finally!) and our food finally appeared in the open. By then, the other participants had already had their fill, and we have only just begun! It was around 9pm then, and the sky was dark and cloudy. Rumbling happened in the background, but soon faded away.

The night was great, with all the people sitting out there, eating, talking, playing (with those funny games of theirs lol). Basically, entertainment :)

Realised that the food brought up was simply too much, esp. with the presence of the BBQ pit. Imagine, bbq-ed chicken wings for dinner, with fresh vegetables and the standard staple of noodles. Irresistable! *craves for more*

The night soon quietened down, as the participants went to sleep, whilst we were still helping ourselves to the dessert (nata de coco, longan, pineapple, fruit cocktail) using an old-fashioned can-opener (oh yea, physics does not teach you how to use that!) and poking the fruits using satay sticks (force/area...hmmmm).

The next day was pretty okay, woke up a lil' groggy, possibly due to the lack of sleep. Plus, my head was wet, maybe due to my travel pillow (which was wet) or the ground of the tent. Either way, it wasn't about to stop my appetite for breakfast. Had a rather hearty breakfast, though I felt that the rest of the comm din seem to be interested in eating much.

Broke camp soon after, and made our way downwards. Was supposed to lead the way down, but I stationed myself along one of the obstacles, and Candice ended up leading, with no 2nd man behind her. Managed to catch up, but it sorta wasn't procedural already. OTOT, it seemed. Was in the middle mainly to help out with the participants on the way down, but after Samantha sprained herself, the line really grew too long.

In the end, we had 2 groups travelling, the faster (led by Candice, cos we needed to rush for the cabs) and the slower group (led by Safraz). Was the last man to help and pick up the end of the line, but we slowed down after the river crossing en route to the 2nd waterfall. Managed to get down there using another route (under the big tree trunk) which was muddy and offered lesser grip, in comparison with the route we went up by.

So, I managed to try another alternative route.

On the way down, the leeches struck. First Safraz, then me, then Olivier. Pretty minor for me and Safraz, but for Olivier he had it pretty hard. Bleeding non-stop, and it was actually(!) my first time looking at leeches along a trek in forested areas and water sources (including Singapore).

Time was running short, and the cabs were about to arrive, so Nasri and me went forward (or should I say, ran) to the entrance of the plantation to meet the cabs, so that they would not go off.

And it reminded me of NS again. Full Pack running. FBO running. Heh.

After the main group went off with Candice to Marrybrown in Kota Tinggi, Zhi Han and I waited for the second group at the plantation gate with 2 cabs, and the sky overhead became overcast. Rumbling could be heard in the background.

Definitely a onimous sign.

Luckily enough, the second group came out quickly enough, and we managed to get into the taxis just before the rain poured on us. Soon, we were back in Kota Tinggi, and linked up with the rest of the group.

Washed up and dried myself, soon it was time to take the bus and back to Larkin. A quick debrief, and most of the participants went home via 170, while 8 of us (Candice, Farah, Huan Liang, Nasri, Olivier, Peizhen, Zhi Han) went for a feast at Taman Sri Tebrau Hawkers Centre.

Funny thing: I was asked by a chinese man how to get up the waterfalls, and I said there's a route. He asked if it was easy, and whether there was a need for the guide, and I SOOOOO wanted to tell him that he can employ Rovers people as guides. Wahahaha...

This is a trip full of threes!
3 groups started off the trip (2 participant groups and comm group)
3 waterfalls to clear
3 leeches seen on 3 people
3 cabs left first
3 times it rained heavily
3 comm and 3 participants in the later group
3 slips by Nasri on the way down (okay, din mean to put this also...but....:P)
And yada yada yada....

Take care of yourself guys, especially those who were wet from the rain and subject to the torturous winds ;) And those who obtained injuries courtesy of this trip, rest well...

More revisions, tent washing, to do tomorrow -_-"

The Longest Yard!

Man, farnie movie of this year. Then again, I dun watch much movies recently, do I?

Irregardless of that, this is the movie to recommend ;)

Was initially in school today morning for a simple CTW project discussion with Hauwan and Mingyi. But, it RAINED. Luckily though, I was in an air-conditioned bus, so I was spared the torrential rain which suddenly hit Singapore.

So I managed to get off at YIH (luckily AGAIN) and made my way to MacDonald's to meet up with them. Discussion went smoothly, went through my stuff and whatever I had thought of.

Then, went to do some Rovers stuff regarding the application for the Cyclohunt permit. Apparently, the police require more detailed info, so there I was, trying to work out a new route for my side after the recce over the weekend. Managed to finish it off, and Tianqi helped me finish the North route. Sent the email to SGT Lee, to let him process the information. (He sounded like Lian Guo on the phone sia -_-")

After finishing up with some admin for my side, I proceeded to head down to Cathay CineLeisure to meet up with Velda for lunch. Yi Si joined us shortly after, and we went to watch "The Longest Yard".

It was simply a fantastic and hilarious movie. Man, this type of movie, must watch again and again one. Haha. And Velda claimed that she could sleep, couldn't in the end. (Must be me :P)

After the movie, it was walking around with both of them, talking, chatting. Pretty nice day to do some window shopping. Sighz. It has been some time since I spent my time with them. At least, it was a breath of fresh air. Away from university, for now. Not just Skadi people, or Fuego dudes, even my 01S09 peeps...

Sorry guys, unable to spend time with you all. Hopefully, we'll have more time to spend catching up. Miss ya loads...

Now, relegated to packing my stuff, I feel bored and sian. However, looking forward to the trip tomorrow...Hopefully, the scenery would be great ;)

Tomorrow...LUMBONG beckons.

1 month anniversary ;)
